Community Pharmacy – Milton Keynes

There are 44 pharmacies in Milton Keynes. They provide Essential services to patients who walk in without the need for registration. (Essential services include dispensing, repeat dispensing, receipt of unwanted medicines for safe disposal, support for self-care, health promotion, signposting to other service provision and clinical governance.) Pharmacies are located across the area providing good access to all patients. Nobody has to travel more than 5 miles to reach pharmaceutical services and 90% travel less than 2 miles to a pharmacy.

Pharmacies provide services across the week from early morning (6.00am) until midnight Monday to Saturday and also over several hours on a Sunday. The extended opening of the four 100 hour pharmacies is valued and needed at the current locations.

As well as Essential Services many pharmacies also provide Additional Services – Medicines Use Reviews (MURs). This is a consultation with the patient to discuss how they use their medicines, identifying any issues and supporting compliance. 75% of pharmacies accredited to provide MURs actually deliver this valued service.

Most pharmacies deliver Locally Enhanced Services – which are commissioned locally as needed, including additional hours, stop smoking support, supply of emergency contraception to teenagers, Chlamydia screening, Minor ailments service, needle exchange and supervised consumption.
