People living with Learning Disabilities or Severe Mental Illness encouraged to take up their annual health check.

Date: 25/03/2022 | Category: CCG News

People with learning disabilities or severe mental illness in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes are being encouraged to come forward for their free annual health check.

Anyone living with a learning disability or a severe mental illness who is over the age of 14, is entitled to a free annual health check. Nationally, evidence has shown that people living with a learning disability or a severe mental illness face a number of inequalities, including poorer physical health and challenges with managing long-term conditions. Regular annual health checks can help to identify health issues as early as possible to ensure they get the treatment they need.

The annual health check involves a number of simple checks including blood pressure, blood glucose, height and weight, blood lipid, smoking and alcohol. The check will be delivered by a GP, nurse or another health professional and you may be able to receive the check at home.

Health checks are carried out through collaborative working between the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care System, GP practices, GP federations and our community mental health providers.

Dr Roshan Jayalath, local GP and Clinical Lead for Mental Health in BLMK, said:

“Annual health checks play an incredibly important part in our work to improve the health outcomes of people living with a learning disability or severe mental illness in BLMK. The checks play a vital role in ensuring these patients receive the care that they need.

“Our aim is to make sure that everyone who is eligible for an annual health check receives one each year, so I would encourage anyone who has not yet had their annual health check and their carers, to contact their GP surgery to book one as soon as possible. ”
